BEVERLY ANN SHUKER
DARWIN RIVER
Nominated by David Pearson - Seconded by Marie-Louise Pearson
Beverly has devoted the last 40 years to the Rural Fire Service at Darwin River where she works as a bookkeeper. When Bev isn't balancing the books, she is fighting fires in the region as a volunteer firefighter.
For the past 20 years, Bev has also cared for injured wildlife.
Visitors to her home often find kangaroos and wallabies convalescing in
makeshift pouches hanging from kitchen chairs. So, Bev is no stranger to the lack of sleep of the 4 hourly feeding regimes. But we are sure she also experiences the pride and joy of releasing healthy, independent animals back into the wild.
Even after raising 4 sons who were educated at Berry Springs School, Beverly remains connected to the school and to this day still works in the school canteen.
Beverly has devoted her life to her community. Her neighbors and friends say she is a true 'local hero', someone who is always willing to commit to her community without any expectation of recognition or reward.
Bev was nominated for and won the 2019 Northern Territory Volunteer of the Year for her two decades of wildlife care and her almost 40 years as a volunteer firefighter.
We warmly welcome you Beverly to the family of Seniors Of Excellence NT Inc.
