KATHLEEN LOIS SHORT OAM

Kathleen moved to the Northern Territory in 1965 with her husband Peter when he took up a position at Darwin Hospital, then located at Myilly Point. In 1967, they moved to Katherine where Kathleen taught at the local pre-school and primary school.
Kathleen became immersed in the Katherine Community and in 1974 as a keen embroiderer, started the Northern Territory branch of the Embroiderers Guild of New South Wales.
Kathleen also joined the Katherine District Show Society Council and became an Art and Craft Steward until 1988. Kathleen was made an Honorary Life Member in 1987.
Kathleen had such a passion for education and support of young people that her home was widely recognised as a drop-in centre for young people. She became a District Commissioner for the region's Girl Guides and supported young women to develop confidence and speaking skills through her involvement as a critic for the Penguin Club.
In 1984 Kathleen was elected to the Katherine Town Council and in 1988 was appointed Deputy Mayor.
In 1996 Kathleen moved back to Darwin and began to donate her time as a member of Palmerston Uniting Church. She also volunteers her time at Somerville Community Services', Christmas Gift Wrapping stall at Casuarina Square and has continued as a volunteer at Somerville for over 23 ears.
Kathleen was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 1997 in recognition of her many years of service to the Katherine Community and Local Government.
