Ms Roddy Calvert - Tennant Creek NT
Roddy Calvert is the History Keeper of Tennant Creek and the Barkley Region and by far the biggest contributor in documenting the area's rich historical heritage. During her years of work with the Tourism Industry, in particular, the Battery Hill Mining Centre and the Tennant Creek Information Centre, Roddy has personally documented the rich mining and pastoral history of the region.
Over the years she has worked hard to preserve local history and relics by documenting the memories of old timers and collecting memorabilia and setting up and conducting informative tours and exhibitions. She is also a keen advocate for the preservation of our historical buildings and important heritage sites such as the Old Telegraph Station building and the original 10 head stamp battery at Battery Hill. Without her passion and dedication much of our colorful history may well have been lost and forgotten. Roddy's dedication has ensured that our history has been preserved and displayed to inspire the locals and future generations and to share with the many visitors who pass this way.
Roddy has also contributed to the community in other ways. She taught marching in the early 1980's and established the Tennant Creek Marching Club. She was an active volunteer for the Tennant Creek Go Kart Grand Prix, the St Patricks Day Races, the Desert Harmony Festival and the Spell Bore Camp Draft.
Roddy has been a long time member and served for 10 years as the first Vice President of the Country Womens Association (CWA) in Tennant Creek. She was also a member of the National Trust and the Barkley Regional Tourism Association of the Northern Territory.
In 2010, was presented with an Award from Rotary for her role as a valued community helper.
Roddy Calvert is indeed a most deserving recipient of a Seniors Of Excellence Award.
