Charlie King OAM
Lyons
Nominated by Michael Foley OAM
Decades spent working in Community Development, Juvenile Justice, Child Protection and Family Violence across the Northern Territory gives Charlie a unique perspective on the strengths and challenges that face our community.
Since 2006, Charlie has been working in partnership with Catholic Care NT, developing Men's Programs and the `NO MORE' Campaign. The Project has partnerships, targeting all the major sporting codes to address violence in their clubs and their supporters. They are also encouraged to and assisted in writing their own Domestic Violence Action Plans.
Charlie, as the founder of the No More Campaign/Program, travelled around the NT in 2006 and visited 34 Communities, Urban and Remote, talking to them about family violence.
When he told them that an act of violence was happening every minute of every day, they said "NO MORE All men should link up."
Charlie also says, "Recently we have changed the way we engage with communities by asking them what they want to do about family violence and who should do it. The project is then funded. They do the work, and we support and guide them. Our aim is to have them trained enough so they can apply for funding themselves and run their own programs."
To date, Government Funding, both Territory and Federally, has seen workers in the 'NO MORE' project, employed in all major centers and in some remote communities.
Charlie King is the author and mentor of this program, and he drives it, because he knows the importance of the work and knows the outcomes do make a difference.
