Marjory Holle
Marjory Joy Holle moved to the Territory after losing her husband in 2011 and with the help of her daughter Tania, soon found accommodation for her Mum and her handicapped sister, Nicole.
Marjorie volunteered at HPA Industry where Nicole was a client and also volunteered with Total Recreation which fundraises and delivers client care and was Nicole's social networking group.
Marjorie found that she needed other activities to keep her busy and so she started walking around the suburbs, collecting cans and bottles. This started out as a recreational activity and soon supplemented Marjorie's and Nicole's pensions.
Sadly, 2 years ago, Nicole passed away. Now, 3 times a day, seven days a week, Marjorie goes and cleans up around the Karama Shopping Centre and the numerous parks and gardens in the area to keep herself busy and a little part of her community, clean and tidy.
When she is out and about, Marjorie also takes time to talk with locals who may need a person to share a little time with. She occasionally sits with an elderly woman who just sits at the Bus stop, silently lamenting the loss of her husband or she might stop and talk with locals in the park to hear their story.
"Over the years," says Tania. "Mum has met some wonderful people and they all keep an eye out for each other. Even the Security Guards at Karama Shopping Centre have got to know her. They had her fixing their uniform work shirts."
Tama says they are all important to Marjory, as she is to them and they, each in their own way, give her purpose in getting up every day.
Tania nominated her Mum for a Seniors Of Excellence NT Award 2021
Thank you Tania. What a beautiful story!
