Norman and his wife, Christine, arrived in Darwin in August 1974, just in time to experience the wrath of Cyclone Tracy. Norman only intended to stay in Darwin for 6-8 weeks, but after Cyclone Tracy, they bought a house and made Darwin home.
Norman has always been involved with sports, especially Touch Football. As a dedicated sports man, Norman volunteered in 1975 to help reconstruct the Darwin Rugby League Clubhouse and grand-stand at Richardson Park.
Norman became heavily involved in Darwin Touch Football and became a player, coach, administrator, referee, manager, and president. He was also the NT Team
Manager at National Championships. In 2000, Norman was awarded a Life Membership of his Club.
Norman went on to support Rugby League in Darwin until 1997 as a player, treasurer, Vice President and President. He was awarded an Australian Sports Medal (ASM) for his contribution to NT Sport.
Not only has Norman been an avid supporter of sport, he also completed an Undergraduate Degree in 1997, 2 master's degrees and in 2019 submitted the first draft of his PhD Thesis. With all of this in Norm's life, he still managed to find time to write the first of his16 books, all of which he has generously donated to many organisations for sale as fundraisers (with no royalty asked for or accepted).
Norman worked with the United Nations in East Timor in 1999, after which he began supporting NT History with a focus on the Military. He became the Director of the Darwin Military Museum in 2014 and a Life Member of the Royal Australian Artillery Association (NT) in 2019.
Norman was also a finalist in the 2020 Senior Territorian of the Year.
Norman is a warrior for the things he believes in and a strong advocate for those who earn his trust. He continues to donate his time as a valued Presenter, Guest Speaker and Master of Ceremonies at a multitude of events and is currently writing 3 more books.
