Shirley is an inspiring indigenous woman who has achieved so much in her life. Shirley grew up in Borroloola and although she didn't finish school, it didn't stop her from developing a passion for Aboriginal fashion and art and she became involved in that industry following Cyclone Tracey in 1974.
In the early 80's, Shirley joined Quota international, an organisation assisting women to develop their skills. Shirley was introduced to public speaking and began serving the community through Quota inspiring other women. Doing this gave her the confidence to coordinate events, open her own busineses and mentor other business owners. Shirley has travelled all over the world showcasing Aboriginal Art & Fashion and is a pioneer of this industry in the Northern Territory.
In 1989 Shirley was one of the first women to join Rotary (a known men's club). Shirley recently received her Rotary 30 years of service certificate.
In 2006, Shirley began assisting and volunteering at the Mason Gallery, where she has provided invaluable support.
Shirley is an inaugural member of Palmerston Combined Probus Club. She was in charge of the "Dining Out" roster until her health began to fail. However, Shirley now has a trading table at the monthly meetings to provide a little bit of extra money for the club, Shirley says that she has a "Love for Life" and one needs to "Put back what has come to them".
Shirley Was recently awarded the highly prestigious 2019 NAIDOC Week NT Female Elder of the Year.
