After Cyclone Tracy, Andrea helped set up temporary medical clinics at cyclone shelters until formal medical facilities were established.
Andrea later studied teaching at NTU and throughout her career, specialised in early childhood education. Andrea was a proud teacher in the Parents as Teachers (PAT) program. PAT uses a holistic approach to strengthening families. Through evidence-based early childhood home visiting model, they provided services to pregnant women and families with children from birth through kindergarten. The aim of the program was to;
• Prevent child abuse and neglect.
• Increase parent knowledge of early childhood development.
• Improve parenting practices, increase children's school readiness.
• Provide early detection of developmental delays and health issues.
Throughout her career as an educator Andrea gained the reputation of being a sympathetic and constructive supporter of struggling parents and children.
Andrea became an informal carer for 3 very senior Territorians supporting them to interact in the community. Should any people in her care be injured or become ill, she makes herself available 24/7.
Because of her passion for Seniors, Andrea is often approached by seniors or their loved ones to provide advice on what services are available.
