Daphne Read AO - Bakewell
Daphne is a remarkable Territorian, She was the first female School Principal in the NT, leading teams at Darwin, Nightcliff and Driver Primary Schools.
Daphne took on the role of CEO of the Royal Life Saving Society for 5 years that evidenced her ability to diversity her abilities and skills.
She has contributed to the community in so many ways, not the least being her role in producing the ‘Beat’ school musical for 32 years. Daphne remains on the Board of Somerville after 47 years, chairs the NT Government’s Water Safety Advisory Council and is the Uniting Church’s NT Representative on the Uniting Care Board.
Apart from the many Boards she volunteers her time to, there are many other duties she undertakes. She plays the piano weekly for the Driver Pre School and at her church. She opens her home to her services as a Justice of the Peace and also undertake duties as a JP at the Palmerston Library.
Daphne was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia for her services to the community; her services to the Royal Life Saving Society; the development of social education programs in East Timor; and to youth as an educator and initiator of art programs that fostr children’s development and participation. Daphne is an outstanding Senior Territorian, a mentor, friend, pastoral carer and leader.
