George Curran
Nominated by Pamela Margaret Hamill
Seconded by Miss Lucy Campbell
In 1996, George Curran joined Wlldcare. He, with his partner Jenny Norris, had been caring for Wallabies for some years before then. George and Jenny started with Wallabies but soon expanded their care to possums, some birds and rodents and really, whatever else came their way.
George has always shared the care of these animals, designing and building cages, foraging daily for fresh bush-tucker, cleaning cages, playing a major role in both responding to rescue calls and releasing rehabilitated possums.
Over the past several years since his semi-retirement, George, an engineer, has designed a number of cages for different situations and purposes. He has built them or assisted other Carers to build them and set them up.
George is very generous with his time relocating cages, repairing them, setting them up for others, assisting other Carers with re-locating animals, running bush-tucker training sessions, leading on regular possum releases and generally providing help and advice to whomever asks or needs assistance.
George also assists in difficult rescues. George has always worked long hours but somehow, still finds time to assist with the care of wildlife since 1991.
Between 2001 and 2005, George was involved with a group of friends in voluntarily supporting refugees in a settlement program.
George recently turned 71 and is now retired but a large part of his day is still devoted to the care of wildlife and the support of other carers.
