In 1998, John was the inaugural President of the EH-HR Holden Car Club NT which today it is known as the Classic Holden Car Club of NT. He also organised and compered very successful Quiz Nights for around 14 years and ran many major Club Events over the years. John's Presidency came to a close in 2019 and these days, he is an advisor to the committee.
John was the inaugural Chairman of the Northern Territory Motoring Council that was set up in 2005 to represent 33 non motor-sport clubs throughout the NT. He became the Executive Officer at the 1st AGM, holding that position until his retirement in 2019.
John joined the Rotary Club of Darwin in August 2001. From 2005 to the present, he has served on the Board, or as an advisor to the Board. John was also an Assistant District Governor for Rotary, managing Rotary Clubs from Darwin to Tennant Creek to Nhulunbuy to Timor Leste.
It is believed that John raised some $650,000 over 11 years for several Charities including Rotary, Variety NT the Children's Charity; The Leukaemia Foundation and others.
John was one of the main organisers of the Variety Australia Day Ute Run from 2006 to 2017, raising funds for Variety NT the Children's Charity.
Late in 2014, John was approached by Chief Minister Adam Giles to attend the big, 5 day SummerNats event to be held in Canberra, 2015. The purpose was to 'pinch' ideas to run a similar event in Alice Springs promoting Red Centre Tourism. He arranged for the Directors of SummerNats to meet with NT Major Events in Darwin. This resulted in a joint company being set up to pursue the idea.
The first event, held in September of 2015, had 472 classic cars, street machines and hot rods with their owners, friends and families from all over Australia, converging on Alice Springs. The second year saw 800 participants from across the nation. Millions of dollars have been injected into the Alice Springs community and beyond, every year from this event.
John is another of those amazing people that gets things done and his attention to the importance and value of volunteering is clearly reflected in his nomination.
